From what I have researched so far, the movie is a historical drama that illustrates Russian author, Leo Tolstoy’s (War and Peace) later years as he struggles to balance fame and wealth with his commitment to a life devoid of material things. Michael Hoffman has taken on the extraordinary challenge of relaying the story to us by creating a screenplay adaption of the novel by Jay Parini.
He has also put together a fascinating cast ensemble, with the likes of James McAvoy, Christopher Plummer, Helen Miren and Paul Giamatti. (Helen Miren and Christopher Plummer replaced Meryl Streep and Anthony Hopkins originally schedule to play Sofya and Leo Tolstoy).
The movie is currently filming in Germany and is scheduled for Spring 2009 release in the UK. I am trying to find out if there will be a US release as well. In my opinion a fascinating cast ensemble, a good story line and a visionary director make for a wonderful historical drama. Stay tuned for more details.
