ELEGY is the story of the passionate relationship between a celebrated New York college professor, David Kepesh (Kingsley) and a young Cuban-born student, Consuela Castillo (Cruz) whose beauty both mesmerises and torments him. The film is based on Pulitzer Prize winner Philip Roth’s short novel The Dying Animal, about a man who, although passionate about women, is unable to commit to any one in particular until Consuela. As the story unfold, their intimate connection transforms them far more than either could imagine through lust, mortality, family, intimacy and commitment. Academy Award winners Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz, give an outstanding performance as usual and are wonderful to watch together in this film. Although the subject matter is no surprise to anyone, the film is refreshing to watch because of its ability to deal with adult issues while remaining tasteful and artistic. The film is rated R.
