Actually I am really glad the movie Up was selected for the opening ceremony at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, which runs May 13th to 24th. I think it is a refreshing approach to select a 3D animation rather than a drama or documentary especially at this years festival. It sets a good tone for the entertainment industry because it is a reminder that during these difficult economic times, we can all use an emotional UPlifting and what better way than allowing Hollywood to help us along. That was the mission during the great depression of the 1930’s and it sure seems to be the objective during the “not yet/maybe/silent” depression of 2009.
This wonderful story is about a 78-year old man, who ties thousands of balloons to his house in an effort to go on the adventure trip of his lifetime through South America, only to find out in mid air he is stuck with an annoying 9-year old, adventure seeking stow-away. Hence, the adventure begins.
A Disney -Pixar Film, Up is directed by Peter Docter (Monsters, Inc) as well as award winning John Lasseter (Toys Story 1 and 2). It opens Nationwide May 29, 2009
