With the seal of approval from the Sundance Film Festival and The Berlin Film Festival, the movie Please Give comes to us from Sony Pictures Classic Studios for a limited engagement and distribution.
The story is about a woman named Kate (Catherine Keener), who purchases furniture “on the cheap” from the children of the newly deceased at their estate sales. She then turns around and sells them at her trendy Manhattan store for a HUGE profit. While bargain shopping from the dead, she often gives to the poor to compensate for her guilty conscience.
But what she ends up struggling with the most is teaching her daughter values, while she conducts her business. Simultaneously, she must find a way to deal with her husband Alex (Oliver Pratt) who she shares life, parenting and a business with since he seems to question most any decision she takes in her venture to make profit and run a household while holding on to her morals.
Please Give is written and directed by Nicole Holofcener who, through this movie attepts to shows the viewer a humorous approach to dealing with modern life’s contradictions, good intentions and shaky moral bearings.
Cast includes: Catherine keener, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Rebecca Hall, Sarah Steele, Ann Guilbert, Lois smith. The film opens in New York and Los Angeles only, so if and only if it makes it to your town, I highly recommend you see it. Otherwise, tag it on Netflix.
